Let me introduce Microsoft’s AI + medical projects in recent years. I want to know what artificial intelligence can do in the medical field in the future. Join the 2020 World Artificial Intelligence Conference Microsoft Forum, which will be announced on July 10.

All along, Microsoft has been actively exploring the possibility of combining computer science with medical health and life sciences. Whether it is preventing, treating and eliminating a series of diseases, making more people have access to medical and health services, or improving public health and personal hygiene, it will help save millions of lives around the world.

AI + medical projects

Microsoft Healthcare uses AI to boost human health and well-being

Computer science is changing with each passing day, and has always been closely related to human life, and has brought a profound impact on social development. The development of AI has made many impossible things in the past a reality, able to recognize words and images, discover patterns in complex systems and perform inferences, and learn like humans. AI is extending human senses and changing human understanding of the world. It may not be the final answer to all human social problems, but it is a powerful booster for us to enhance our own innovation capabilities.

In the past few years, many outstanding applications of Microsoft AI technology in the medical and health field have proven this point. For example, Microsoft and the Novartis Foundation have jointly developed an AI-enabled digital health tool that can speed up the early detection of leprosy and help poverty-stricken areas with scarce medical resources to eliminate leprosy. Microsoft also cooperates with a number of world-class eye care providers to use Azure machine learning for early screening and detection of eye diseases to reduce preventable blindness. The project was adopted by the Telangana government as early as 2017 in the public health screening program.

However, public health progress is not equal on a global scale, and human health costs are still high. Incurable diseases and underdeveloped areas particularly need our attention. While researchers are committed to improving diagnosis and treatment plans from a medical perspective, technological advances can also help them accelerate research and expand the possibilities of medical treatment. Through the combination of AI and medical health, the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases can be improved, especially some of the most difficult diseases including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and cancer.

At the same time, in the past 10 to 20 years, a large number of medical equipment and analysis methods in the medical field have been digitized. The development of mobile devices also generates a lot of data. If these data are used effectively, we can provide people with more highly personalized, accurate, and targeted diagnosis and treatment methods, and provide a comprehensive view of the public’s health. It not only tells people the current health status, but also the future.

Dr. Peter Lee, senior vice president of Microsoft, head of Microsoft Research and Microsoft Healthcare, said in an interview that healthcare is a huge business valued at US$7.5 trillion globally, and it is increasing More data, as well as services such as artificial intelligence and computing technologies that can make full use of the data, are migrating to the cloud. Microsoft is paying close attention to and supporting this as a priority.

Under this vision, on January 29, 2020, Microsoft launched the AI for Health project dedicated to improving the health of people and communities around the world. It is part of Microsoft’s AI for Good program, which aims to empower non-profit organizations, researchers, and organizations through artificial intelligence and data science tools. On the basis of protecting privacy, security and maintaining ethics, Microsoft will cooperate with industry experts to explore the medical and health industry.

AI for Health focuses on three key areas:
• Explore new discoveries. Including AI to accelerate medical research and promote disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
• Insight into global health. Raise people’s common understanding of mortality and life expectancy to prevent the occurrence of a global health crisis.
• Promote health equity. Reduce health inequality and increase medical opportunities for people who lack medical resources.

Dr. Peter Lee believes: “We can regard AI for Health as an outlet for research enthusiasm – what can AI do to promote the development of medicine?” Many researchers at Microsoft Research are very interested in medical treatment and medicine and are committed to explore the possibilities of AI application in various medical diagnosis and treatment applications. Today, 4 billion people worldwide do not have access to the medical and health services they deserve. Artificial intelligence and technological development must help create fairer solutions.

What has Microsoft AI+Health done?
Actively combat the new crown epidemic

With the global development of the epidemic, Microsoft is accelerating the AI for Health project to provide support for researchers on the front line of research on the new crown epidemic. A number of cooperation and actions to fight the new crown epidemic are being carried out in an orderly manner, including providing powerful computing resources for the “High Performance Computing Alliance to Fight New Coronary Pneumonia” organization, and assisting the visualization and prediction of new crown pneumonia data released by the University of Washington Institute of Health Measurement and Evaluation and many more.

Researchers from Microsoft Research Asia, based on their professional knowledge and research experience in computational biology, data analysis, and other fields, have built the new crown data analysis website COVID Insights (covid.msra.cn) , hoping to use the digital surface to provide more in-depth and more information. Analyze the relevant data of the new crown epidemic from a perspective.

Weakly supervised learning helps medical imaging
Now through deep learning, AI can assist doctors in pathological screening and help them improve diagnosis efficiency. Researchers from Microsoft Research Asia hope to train this system through an end-to-end deep learning method to process, classify, and cut medical images with limited annotation data. This method can be applied to many fields such as colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and cervical cancer. By reducing the dependence on labeled data, more data can be quickly analyzed.

Drone + mosquito trap to help track the spread of the virus

In most parts of the world, mosquitoes are a serious public health problem. They may transmit serious diseases such as dengue fever, West Nile virus, malaria and Zika virus. It is estimated that about 700 million people are infected with various diseases by mosquitoes every year, and one out of every seventeen people die from mosquito-borne diseases, especially in tropical regions.

Microsoft researchers combined drone technology with mosquito traps to develop a new type of mosquito trap used to track viruses. It can tell scientists the time, location, temperature, wind, humidity, etc. of each mosquito. At the same time, its design prevents it from failing under harsh natural conditions such as wind and rain like traditional mosquito traps. Drones enable researchers to accurately locate virus data carried by mosquitoes in a vast area in a low-cost and time-consuming manner, and use machine learning training to detect and predict potential outbreaks of diseases, helping people to take corresponding measures in advance Precaution.

Cooperative research on pathogens in the field of anti-infection

China’s antibacterial drug management field faces two core pain points in the process of moving towards the integration of diagnosis and treatment: firstly, at the conceptual level, the rational use of antibacterial drugs by grassroots professionals urgently needs to be improved; secondly, at the method and technical level, etiology and medicine sensitivity testing capabilities need to be strengthened to promote the further combination of clinical diagnosis and treatment.

To this end, Pfizer Biopharmaceutical Group has cooperated with Microsoft to use cloud computing and artificial intelligence technology to develop intelligent algorithms that can assist primary-level laboratory departments to identify infectious pathogens based on infection-related data, and use intelligent image recognition to help primary-level doctors identify different types The fungus uses an efficient and intelligent way to help increase the detection rate of infectious pathogens, thereby helping the clinic and realizing precise anti-infective treatment.

All of the above are part of Microsoft’s many explorations in the medical and health field. In most parts of the world, healthcare faces some challenges. For developed countries, this is a financial tipping point. For developing countries, access to good medical services is still scarce and unequal. People increasingly hope that technological advancement can actually change their lives. This is also Microsoft’s long-term vision for participating in the medical and health field.

The 2020 World Artificial Intelligence Conference Cloud Summit (WAIC 2020) is about to open. As a strategic partner of the conference, Microsoft will hold the “Artificial Intelligence for a Sustainable Future” Microsoft Forum online on the afternoon of July 10, with industry experts, scholars, and experts at home and abroad. Business leaders focused on the application of AI in urban construction, infectious disease protection, energy saving and emission reduction and other fields, and discussed how cutting-edge technology can promote the sustainable development of the entire society.
